Counting
Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalms 90:12 (NIV)
Hello 2026! We have crossed over into another year of life. People have begun making resolutions, setting goals, signing up for membership to do different activities, 21 days fasting, etc. I always look forward to this time of year because 18 days into the new year I celebrate a birthday, this year I’ll be 39 years of age. On several occasions I’ve been asked what do you want for your birthday or what are you doing for your birthday? It would seem like a simple question, yet it feels very difficult to give a response this year. One of the reasons being is that I am in different place this birthday than previous years. My first birthday since the transition of my mother, some additions and takeaways, designated for episcopal elevation, relationships are different and a few other things. Amid these things I am not sad but rather fulfilled.
In the verse for today the psalter encourages us to learn to number our days, basically make each day count. Various things will occur during the journey of life but can you make each day count for something. Tribulations, tumultuous times, traumas, etc. continue to fill the days of our life but how you respond is a part of the counting process to the days of your life. My fulfillment rests in the fact that I understand my days are numbered so soaking in difficulty can’t be my resolve but gaining wisdom must be the outcome. So, what do I want to do or desire for this 39th chapter? I want to keep counting and make each day worth it, continue to fulfill my mission, allow God to keep stretching me, draw closer to God, love more, give more, serve more… the greatest gift one can receive after salvation is fulfilling your purpose.
