Getting Over It

“The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.””

1 Samuel‬ 16‬:1‬ NIV‬‬

In life we are faced with the challenge of encountering moments that can leave us stuck, frustrated, broken, and the list goes on. After experiencing these moments, we are encouraged to get over it, move past it, accept it or it is not that deep. If we are honest with ourselves there are things that just are not that simple to get over or accept. Trauma, transition, heartbreak, and loss can become the most lasting moments to get over. Here is what I have discovered that the inability to get over it, can deny the possibility of going forward.

In 1 Samuel 16 the question is raised, how long will you mourn for Saul? The Lord has rejected Saul as being king and now it is time to go anoint a new king. Samuel was wrestling with the grief of what he desired, God is not approving. How often do we find ourselves lingering on the rope of grief because what we desire God does not agree with? God shows us it is a natural reaction to grieve what we do not agree with, but God puts a time limit on when we must learn how to get up and get over it. The question is how long will you mourn? How long will you stay stuck on what you cannot change? God cares about our grieving periods, but God has a desire for us not to stay arrested in the grief that we cannot move forward with what God has determined. Getting over does not mean forgetting memories, getting over just says I have accepted what I do not agree with and I have to go forward to what I have been called to do. Let me say I do not believe that getting over it is an easy thing, but it is a choice that requires intentional work. So, I must ask the question to you today. What is it that you need to get over so that you can receive something new in your life? What is it that is hindering you from performing at your best? What is it that has come and stolen your joy and your motivation, and your desire to achieve more? Make up your mind today, I will acknowledge it, accept it, and get over it.
