Disruptions

Updated: Dec 31

“The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.” Luke 8:24 NIV

Last week I had the privilege of sharing a word of encouragement for the Law Enforcement “Faith and Blue Week” in Philadelphia. A couple of minutes into my assignment radios began sounding, officers began to leave, and chatter taking place. Three officers of the Phila Police Department were shot and taken to the hospital. While pursuing through the words I felt the disruptions occurring. Encouraged afterward that I shared good words, but I still struggled internally because of the disruptions. How do you maintain focus amidst distractions? How do you continue to be present in the moment when you want to just throw up your hands and say I’ll try again at a different time?

Jesus and the disciples go over to the other side of the lake, once on the boat Jesus falls asleep. As they journey a storm hits the water and they are now in danger, but Jesus stays asleep until the disciples wake the master. Jesus gets up and rebukes the storm and the storm ceases. Jesus teaches us a lesson in disruptions, you have a choice in whether or not distractions will disrupt you. A storm is occurring, but Jesus is sleeping, the text says the disciples wake Jesus not the storm. There is a level of peace that we can have amidst disruption. Can you sleep even through the storms or is the peace of God so absent from your life that everything disturbs you? Disruptions will forever happen in life but learn how to push through the disruptions and complete the journey. What’s disrupting you today? What disruptions keep occurring in your life that cause a lack of sleep and peace?
