Options

“Now the Lord provided a huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”

One of the things I enjoy when attending events or dining out is having options. I appreciate the freedom to choose rather than having someone else decide what they think is best for me. Have you ever gone to a restaurant where they tell you substitutions are not allowed? You look at the plate and think, “I don’t even eat those sides.” Yet if you want something different, you have to pay extra. Sometimes the frustration isn’t about the food—it’s about not having the opportunity to choose.

Life works differently. God has given us the gift of choice, but every choice carries consequences.

The story of Jonah reminds us of this truth. God called Jonah with a clear assignment: Go to Nineveh. The destination, the mission, and the expectation were all made plain. Yet Jonah exercised his option to go in the opposite direction.

Notice the progression of the text:

• God gave the call.

• Jonah chose to flee.

• Jonah paid the fare.

• God sent the storm.

• Others suffered because of Jonah’s decision.

• Jonah was exposed.

• Jonah was thrown overboard.

• Then God provided a great fish.

What is striking is that the fish was not merely an act of judgment; it was also an act of mercy. What appeared to be confinement became God’s provision for preservation. The belly of the fish became a place of reflection rather than destruction.

Many of us know what it feels like to make choices that have delayed our progress, strained our relationships, or interrupted God’s intended direction for our lives. Sometimes our own decisions place us in situations that jeopardize our forward movement. Yet even there, God’s grace continues to pursue us.

Jonah 1:17 presents another option—not merely survival, but transformation. Jonah could remain stubborn, or he could allow his circumstances to reshape his heart. Before God changed Jonah’s location, He first addressed Jonah’s disposition.

I imagine Jonah having an honest conversation with himself in the darkness of that fish. No distractions. No audience. No excuses. Just Jonah and the God he had been running from.

Then chapter two opens with these powerful words:

“From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.”

That raises a challenging question for each of us: When life places you in an unexpected place, what is your first option?

Who is the first person you call when trouble comes? What do you run toward when your plans fall apart? Do you seek God’s presence first, or do you exhaust every other option before turning to Him?

Beloved, every one of us has made decisions we wish we could undo. Yet the good news of the Gospel is that God’s grace often meets us in the places our choices have taken us. The same God who provided a fish for Jonah still provides mercy for His children. He specializes in giving another chance to people who are willing to repent, pray, and obey.

Today, you still have an option.

You can continue traveling the road that led you into the storm, or you can choose the path that leads back to God. Your past selections do not have to dictate your future direction. God’s grace offers a better option, and His mercy makes forward movement possible.
