“Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from telling lies. Turn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” Psalm 34:13-14 (NIV)
On September 10th, 2025, we witnessed the life of Conservative Charlie Kirk taken during a speech at Utah Valley University Campus. For many the name Charlie Kirk was new but for others the name was closely affiliated with the current occupant of the White House. Undoubtedly Kirk was known for opposition to abortion, DEI, LGBT rights, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the list could go on. I believe that it was unfair for his children to be without a father and his wife without a husband, but when someone is unapologetically racist and spends their life sowing seeds of evil, division, and hate into this land it can only yield negative outcomes. We may not agree with Kirk’s views, but we must agree that he decided which side of line he stood on. The question must be raised to each of us, what side are you on?
Our text today encourages us to take a stance, do evil or do good. What comes out of your mouth can promote evil or good, do you promote unity or division? I notice that in last couple of weeks since this incident there have been more sermons speaking to this idea of hatred in America. I believe that this is a call for individuals to draw their line in the sand of where they stand in relation to these issues. Now is not the time to be silent but rather find peace and pursue it. You don’t have to display hatred to take a stand, but you must do what is good and avoid evil at all costs. Are you ready to take a stand or are you comfortable with losing the right to freedom? The church has a responsibility and its time to stand up.
I will stand firm in what I believe, even if I must stand alone. For truth is not measured by the crowd, but by the Word of God.
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong.” — 1 Corinthians 16:13
